COACHING COURSES
The NJYS Coaching School is focused on the process of continued learning through State and US Soccer coaching certification. We aim to provide New Jersey coaches the opportunity to gain the certification needed to become effective coaches, and further develop the competencies, attitudes, knowledge, and skills relating to leadership, coaching games, coaching training sessions, leading the team, leading the player, and managing the performance environment.
NJYS State Certificate
The NJYS State Certificate is a level course, formerly known as the “F” License, that meets the requirements of the New Jersey Little League Law P.L. 1988, Chapter 87 (NJSA C.2A:62A 6) relating to immunity from liability unless willful, wanton, or grossly negligent and is the minimum requirement for an NJYS Travel Coach member pass requirements.
This certificate is generally offered in a hybrid format for a total of six-hours (3 hours virtual in a self-paced course hosted on USYS University, 3 hours in-person). The virtual modules through USYS University (Module 1, Module 2, & the Written Assignment) shall be completed prior to attending the field session.
The course examines safety considerations, emergency planning, injury care and prevention, and significant coaching responsibilities of the coach responsible for players within travel programs. An introduction is provided to foster understanding of player-centered and developmentally appropriate coaching for those engaged within the long-term player development process.
Important: The classroom portion of the courses is conducted on-demand through eTrainU and USYS University. Coach candidates are expected to complete the below online training at any point prior to the field session:

NJYS Y Course
Designed as a safety orientation for coaches of youth players participating within in-house settings, the 3 hour Y-Course explores injury prevention, first aid procedures, and general coaching concepts for building safe, fun, inclusive, nurturing, and challenging environments. Course is delivered through a virtual classroom format which can include a combination of online and a virtual learning engagement. The Y Course meets the requirements of the New Jersey Little League Law P.L. 1988, Chapter 87 (NJSA C.2A:62A 6) relating to immunity from liability unless willful, wanton, or grossly negligent; however, it does not meet the minimum requirements for NJYS Travel Coach Members.
The virtual engagement portion of the course is 90 minutes long, while the online assignments take approximately 90 minutes independent of the virtual engagement.

US Soccer Grassroots Licenses
The US Soccer Grassroots Licenses are 4 separate and distinct courses offer to coaches of grassroots players a variety of education entry points based upon ages and corresponding game models specified by the U.S. Soccer Player Development Initiative that include 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11. These course offerings can be completed entirely online or in a hybrid (virtual and in-person) format.
In order to register for any US Soccer Grassroots Course, you will need to open a free account with the US Soccer Learning Center. After creating an account, you will need to complete the free 20-minute Introduction to Grassroots Coaching before you can register for these courses.

Online Courses
US Soccer “D” Course
The US Soccer National D course is specifically designed for coaches working in the Grassroots environment. In addition to the course goals and learning objectives, the course experience is based on the qualities and learning needs of each individual candidate. The profile of the D License Coach is the connection between the content, assignments, and the assessment of the assignments. The profile will safeguard the quality and standards of the D Course. The course is held in a ‘blended learning’ format over 32 hours, through a minimum of 9 weeks. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Complete the Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module
- Complete at least two (2) in-person Grassroots Licenses
- Complete at least one (1) online Grassroots License

US Soccer “C” License
The US Soccer C license aims to support student coaches in developing competencies essential to lead programs for player and team development Coaches who register for this course can expect weekly learning opportunities that will feature a mixture of independent learning using online modules, live virtual meetings, and a 4-day in person meeting led by a licensed U.S. Soccer Educator. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a U.S. Soccer D license for at least six (6) months, and
- Candidates must have access to a team playing 11v11 (U13+) for the duration of the course
There are currently no C License Courses scheduled in New Jersey at this time. We encourage you to check back at a later date.
US Soccer “B” License
The US Soccer B license aims to support student coaches in developing competencies essential to lead programs for player and team development. The B course is organized during a six-month period (January to June and July to December) and will consist of a combination of virtual learning and in-person meetings. The two planned in-person meetings will take place through four-day periods. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a U.S. Soccer C license for at least one (1) year
- Have three (3) or more years of coaching experience (any level)
There are currently no “B” License Courses scheduled in New Jersey at this time. We encourage you to check back at a later date.
Club Technical Leader 1 Course
Club Technical Leader 1 (formerly the US Soccer Director of Coaching License) is a virtual course designed to prepare the student DOC to work as a technical leader of a youth soccer club in a participation environment. This all-virtual format is a combination of two meetings per week, independent learning modules, one-on-one meetings and a final interview with an assigned Director of Coaching Educator. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Hold a US Soccer “B” License.
- Have two (2) or more years of club leadership experience.
- Be currently serving as a Director of Coaching (DOC) for a youth soccer club.
There are currently no Club Technical Leader (1) courses scheduled in New Jersey at this time. We encourage you to check back at a later date.

Lost License Replacement
To recover a lost coaching education license taken through NJ Youth Soccer, please complete the search form below. Upon submission of this search request, the NJYS Coaching Schools department will search for the license in our records. Note: NJYS will no longer accept requests to replace lost license certificates that were obtained prior to January 1, 1998.
In the event the license is found, your NJYS Coaching Profile associated with the request submission will be updated to reflect the license and payment will be collected. In the event the license is not found, NJYS staff will contact you with additional information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Candidates may transfer to an available course so long as that course is not already in progress and has not reached capacity. To transfer courses, please contact communications@njyouthsoccer.com with your current course and desired course information.
NJYS recommends that candidates transfer to the next available course that fits their schedule. If the candidate cannot attend another course, refunds may be issued if the request is made to communications@njyouthsoccer.com before the start date of each course. Once the course has started, refunds may not be available. Emergencies may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Attendance is mandatory for each in-person and virtual session associated with the course that a candidate registers for. Partial attendance or completion may require a candidate to transfer courses and retake it in its entirety. To transfer courses, please contact communications@njyouthsoccer.com with your current course and desired course information.
NJYS hosts a variety of US Soccer Licenses throughout the year. When a course is posted, NJYS communicates registration opportunities through the email database of registered NJYS coaches and on the NJYS website. We encourage potential candidates to keep a lookout for this information.
NJYS may provide a payment plan for individuals registering for US Soccer D, C, B, or A license. 50% of the full payment will be due at the time of registration, followed by 50% of the remaining payment due one (1) week before the course start date. Due to processing costs, there is a $50 surcharge to each participant who requests a payment plan. To request a payment plan, please contact communications@njyouthsoccer.com.
The course schedule, including virtual meetings, etc. will be made available upon the pre-course webinar date (virtual meeting a week before course start date). Weekly educator meeting times and days are determined by Coach Educator availability.
Candidates may have the option to choose a Morning, Afternoon or Evening time slot on a day designated by the Coach Educator if the Coach Educator has availability. Once the course roster is set, the candidate’s educator will be informed through the course communications tab in the US Soccer Learning Center.
Former professional players or foreign license holders that meet the waiver requirements for the specific course, may be eligible to register for a C Course or submit an application for a B Course. Applicants must add official proof of playing experience via letter head from the affiliated clubs, leagues, or organizations on the coach’s Learning Center profile, and submit a Foreign License and Pro Player Application to communications@njyouthsoccer.com. NJYS will evaluate the application and determine whether the applicant is eligible for a waiver.
